IT LOOKS like the liquidity problem of the College Assurance Plan (CAP) group is worse than it wants to acknowledge publicly.
Cocktales has confirmed that the checks issued by CAP to pay for the second semester education of about 40 college scholars enrolled in the Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola campus, bounced.
This, despite CAP even splitting the payments for the Ateneo fees into two installments, the first tranche for November encashment and the second tranche for December.
The CAP checks issued to Ateneo through Allied Bank after Nov. 3 had all been returned for insufficiency of funds, said an Ateneo official who asked not to be identified.
To protect the Jesuit school, the cashier's office has asked the parents of the CAP scholars to make good the bad November checks and issue promissory notes against the December checks if they want to see their children continue their education.
It was the first time that the CAP checks were dishonored, according to a father, who said he has two college students enrolled in Ateneo on CAP educational plans.
And it has now taken longer for the CAP office in Makati City to release the checks to its pre-need scholars.
From one to two days, it has taken CAP this semester eight to nine days after receiving the enrollment assessments to release the checks.
Because of the payment delay, the CAP scholars in Ateneo had to endure being penalized by the school for late payment as well.
Meanwhile, a FOREIGN investor who earlier expressed interest in extending a loan to embattled pre-need firm College Assurance Plan Philippines Inc. (CAP) is having second thoughts because of concerns on the company's ability to renew its dealer's license.
CAP's license to sell education plans expired last Sept. 30. The Securities and Exchange Commission has so far not renewed the license pending CAP's completion of a plan to increase its capital
